"El Pastor" follows a shepherd through one day: at dawn he leads his flock down from the mountains to the meadow, plays his reed flute, the sheep follow as if under a spell, and at dusk he climbs back telling them his sorrows. It was written by the brothers Miguel Ángel and José Ángel Díaz y González de Castilla, the duo Los Cuates Castilla. Billboard named it among the best mariachi songs of all time and says this is the song that earned Miguel Aceves Mejía the nickname El Rey del Falsete: in the chorus the lyric says how the shepherd's flute sings, and the answer is a falsetto. The recording on this page comes from RCA Victor's 2000 compilation.
