"El Rey" is the anthem of Mexican pride, and in his own voice it is a different thing than in Vicente's: drier, more cantina, a man who knows he has been shut out. José Alfredo Jiménez wrote it around 1971; Alicia Juárez recorded it first that year, then Pedro Vargas, and the composer cut his own version in late 1972, shortly before his death in 1973. Vicente Fernández made it global with a mariachi arrangement.

There are two origin stories. Milenio tells the one about the cantina La Gitana in Clavería: a phone call from his partner Paloma Gálvez scolding his bohemian life, and the first verses written right there. El Universal cites the book by Alicia Juárez, his wife: a dinner where a man kept flirting with her, José Alfredo looking out the window, and the phrase "I know I am a king with no throne and no queen".

Record World listed it at number one in Mexico in 1974, a year after his death, and it sits in the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame.
