Volver, Volver
Vicente Fernández · 1972

En sus palabrasIn their words
“Creo que el día que me entierren, todo el mundo alrededor del mundo estará cantando esta canción”
Lo dijo en inglés: I think the day that they bury me, everyone around the world will be singing this song

Vicente la trató como su despedida: en el escenario, con Alejandro al lado, dijo que el día que lo sepultaran la cantaría todo el mundo. Y así fue en diciembre de 2021.
A confession. A man who lost a love admits he was wrong ("Tú tenías mucha razón"), surrenders his pride ("me llegó el momento de perder"), and begs to return to her arms, repeating "volver" until it becomes prayer. The engine is a macho admitting defeat in love, which is why it broke the ranchera mold.

Songwriter's words: in a 1978 interview preserved in Radio Educación's catalog (transmitted 12/01/1978, program key M019COM.n.0141), Fernando Z. Maldonado explained he wrote "Volver, volver" after a friend's breakup; the friend kept repeating he wanted to "volver, volver" with his partner, and Maldonado built the song around the phrase. The catalog summarizes the 17:50 interview. In the same interview he told of Raphael closing a show at Madrid's Palacio de la Música with the song, the audience demanding an encore.
Vicente's words: his closest to explaining its meaning was the on-stage request shared with his son Alejandro: "Esta canción para mí es muy especial, creo que el día que me estén sepultando la va a cantar todo mundo, en televisión o donde quiera que estén. Espero que falten muchos años todavía" (gluc.mx, Dec 12, 2021). He routinely credited the writer over himself: "Siempre he dicho que no hay grandes compositores, sino grandes canciones. Y nunca he dicho que soy compositor" (radiosegovia.net).
Vicente treated it as his farewell: on stage, with Alejandro beside him, he said that the day they buried him the whole world would sing it. And in December 2021 they did.
