"Puerto Montt" is the signature song of Los Iracundos, the Uruguayan group. Lead singer Eduardo Franco wrote it with their manager, Cacho Valdez, and it was recorded in 1968 at RCA Victor's studios in Argentina. It was going to be called "Por tu amor", but an RCA executive in Chile suggested the city's name to break into that market. It worked: within weeks it topped radio in Argentina, Chile and Peru. Franco never set foot in Puerto Montt, and the city later put up a statue of the song's couple, sitting by the sea.
