Ana Gabriel wrote it alone, at her apartment in Colonia Tlalpan, Mexico City, words and music at the same time, the way she always writes.

It came out in 1989 on the album of the same name and hit No. 1 on Billboard's Hot Latin Songs the week of May 5 1990; the album was her second No. 1 on Latin Pop Albums and was nominated for a Grammy. She says she wrote it for no one in particular: the muse would show up at one or three in the morning, and she always kept a pencil, paper, a tape recorder and her guitar beside her.
Thirty years on she still sings it at every show, to a new and younger crowd, and even a salsa version took her by surprise.
