"Como Quien Pierde una Estrella" is the ranchera that made Alejandro Fernández El Potrillo for all of Mexico. A man says "I love you" in the present tense to someone already lost, and compares that loss to watching a star drift into infinity: you still see it, you never reach it.

Humberto Estrada wrote it. Alejandro recorded it for Que Seas Muy Feliz, his fourth album (1995), with Pedro Ramírez producing and arranging; SACM calls it the most successful song of the 1990s in his voice. On Billboard's Hot Latin Songs it entered at No. 49 in January 1996, jumped to No. 14 the next week and peaked at No. 4, with 20 weeks on the chart. It was nominated for Song of the Year at the 1997 Premios Oye.

Estrada has said the song is about loss, but not only romantic loss: family and friends too. In 2020, looking at a Liliana Mercenario painting of a starry sky, he put it this way: "I lost the stars, but there they are, my stars, my loved ones." The recording on this page is the one on the 2011 compilation Lo Esencial de Alejandro Fernández.
